Solid watercolor VS. tube watercolor, which one is more suitable for you?

2025-03-25

Solid watercolor needs to be dissolved in water to obtain color. It is a solid concentrated pigment. It is very convenient to carry if you go out to paint. Although tube watercolor is more convenient to obtain color, it is less durable and may dry out if not used for a long time. So we all recommend that beginners choose solid watercolor!

So how many colors should we choose? It is recommended to start with 24 colors, which includes many commonly used colors! Solid watercolor is highly concentrated, and the color difference before and after being dipped in water is large. The degree of water will affect the saturation. Therefore, it is important to draw a gradient color card before getting a new pigment!

We also need to master the principle of color mixing! The three primary colors, saturation, brightness, etc. are all key. It is not recommended to use black and white frequently, otherwise the color on the paper will become opaque gray.

And the watercolor paper we choose is more important than the pigment! You must choose watercolor paper made of cotton, wood, hemp, bamboo and other materials. The gram weight and texture are very important. Good watercolor paper has good color rendering and uniform transition. It can be repeatedly modified after painting. It is easier to get started and suitable for beginners.

The list of commonly used accessories for painting includes: watercolor brushes, tap brushes, palettes, buckets, pencils, erasers, masking tape, highlighters, white ink, cow bile, blanking fluid, needle pens, etc.

Do you know how long a box of solid color can last? It is recommended for beginners to copy simple works first. A box of 24-color solid color can last at least a year even if you paint one picture a week. When you have accumulated more, consider buying a few more solid colors or choosing larger specifications!
